Should you choose Crazy Egg or Fullstory?

Crazy Egg is the better pick for teams with multiple users working across multiple domains who want to find underperforming pages, analyze user behavior to diagnose why they underperform, and test fixes within a single platform.

Fullstory is the better solution for product managers and marketers who want to understand how users interact with their web and mobile apps, and engage users with multi-step in-app experiences. And who already run a third-party tool for experimentation.

Feature Breakdown: Crazy Egg vs. Fullstory

1. Heatmaps

Crazy Egg and Fullstory both build heatmaps from behavior they capture automatically, with nothing to tag first. Crazy Egg gives you more heatmap types and reports on every tracked visitor. Fullstory shows the top 25 clicked elements in each click category and ranks them by revenue.

Crazy Egg

Every Crazy Egg Heatmap Report includes five visualization types, each answering a different question:

  • Click Maps: a hot and cold view of where visitors click.
  • Scroll Maps: how far down the page visitors get before they drop off.
  • Confetti Maps: individual clicks, color-coded by traffic source, device, campaign, conversion status, and more.ย
  • Overlay Maps: click counts per page element, segmentable the same way as Confetti.
  • List Maps: raw click data per element, useful for moving elements like popups and sticky buttons.

Crazy Egg doesn’t sample traffic by default, but you can customize it for every page tracked.

You also get Instant Heatmaps, which auto-generate as you browse, which is a quick way to spot the pages worth a full report.

Fullstory

Fullstory also produces click and scroll maps.

Similar to Crazy Egg, Fullstory’s maps layer revenue and conversion rate onto page elements, so elements sort by the outcome they contributed to. In both, you need to set the conversion events and set their value first.

Fullstory maps show only the top 25 clicked elements per category; data retention is limited to that of session recordings, and there’s no period-over-period comparison, which Crazy Egg does.

There is also no Confetti equivalent, so no single view plots individual clicks segmented across attributes.

2. Session Recordings

Both tools record user sessions, and both flag frustration signals like rage clicks and dead clicks. On top of web apps, Fullstory records native mobile app sessions, but it isn’t clear how long it retains the sessions

Crazy Egg

Crazy Egg’s session recordings capture how individual visitors interact with your website: their mouse movement, clicks, scrolls, and page transitions.

They arrive auto-labeled with behavioral signals like rage and dead clicks, ecommerce actions like add-to-cart, form interactions, and account events like signup and login.

Visitor list tagged with behavior labels like slow loading, rage click, and abandoned form.

The tags work as filters, so you can jump straight to the sessions where a specific event happened, then narrow further by other filters, like conversion status, pages visited, device, or referral source.

Crazy Egg records only tracked pages and lets you set the percentage of traffic or a fixed number of recordings per page. You’re not optimizing every page, and some are more important than others, so there’s no point recording everything.

Crazy Egg lets you view sessions from up to 2 years ago, depending on your plan. Fullstory doesn’t publish their retention periods.

Fullstory

Fullstory also detects rage and dead clicks in its session replays and gives you similar playback controls and UI layout (visitor details, dev tools, AI summary, event panel with performance data, e.g., load time).

Session replay with tab-switching events and an AI-generated summary of a broken "Add to cart" button.

It detects a few more signals than Crazy Egg, including highlight-and-copy, pinch-to-zoom, and network errors.

Then there is mobile: Fullstory captures native iOS, Android, React Native, and Flutter apps. Crazy Egg has no mobile app recording at all โ€” it only records mobile visitor activity on your website. It doesn’t matter for CRO, but it does for mobile app development.

3. Surveys and CTAs

Both tools let you collect visitor feedback on the page and engage them with on-page experiences. Fullstory lets you build more complex flows, like product tours, but the functionality isn’t included in standard plans.

Crazy Egg

Crazy Egg’s surveys run as a popup widget on a page, or as a standalone link you can send anywhere.ย

When the answers come back, Crazy Egg presents the results in charts, which update in real time, tags text responses for sentiment, and creates a Top Insights summary.

Surveys come with a library of 50+ templates, grouped by job: market research, Net Promoter Score (NPS), product usability feedback, and support-ticket collection. You can also build from scratch and pick your own question types in the no-code editor.

Crazy Egg supports six built-in triggers: on page load, a set number of seconds after load, when the visitor scrolls past the fold, on exit intent as they move to leave, after they’ve viewed a certain number of pages, or when they click a specific button.

Targeting is by page, using individual URLs or wildcards, plus traffic medium, referring domain, device type, and click or scroll behavior.

Popup CTAs have the same targeting, triggering, and customization options, and come in three formats: buttons, popups, and bars.ย

When you set a goal on a popup, you get view, click, and the effect on that goal insights.

Fullstory

Running on-page surveys and gathering feedback with Fullstory doesn’t require coding either.

What sets it apart from Crazy Egg is its Guides, which let you engage users with more complex experiences, such as onboarding product tours and checklists or smart tips and hotspot beacons highlighting interface elements.

These capabilities are relevant for digital product teams who want to improve product adoption and user retention or organizations implementing new tools and optimizing their tech stacks. Use cases Crazy Egg doesn’t target.

Both features are powered by Usetiful, which Fullstory acquired in November 2025, and are available as a paid add-on.

4. A/B Testing and Personalization

Crazy Egg includes native A/B testing and Personalization and lets you build the variants without coding for quick iteration. Fullstory has no native experimentation or personalization.

Crazy Egg

Crazy Egg’s A/B Testing works through a visual page editor or a URL redirect, so your marketing team can launch tests without a developer.

You split the traffic 50/50 between variants, like in traditional split tests, or multi-armed bandit allocation shifts traffic toward whichever variant is winning while the test runs.

A/B test results comparing conversion rates between a control and variant homepage.

Granular audience targeting serves two purposes: run tests on very specific user segments for maximum relevance and personalize the web experience by sending 100% of the segment’s traffic to the variant tailored to their needs.

Finally, Crazy Egg’s GA4 integration pushes per-variant events into Google Analytics where you can slice and dice the data.

Fullstory

Fullstory doesn’t offer a native experimentation product.

Instead, it has a coordination layer, Fullstory Anywhere, that centralizes data from multiple sources, including third-party A/B testing software like Optimizely, AB Tasty, or VWO.

For example, it can use Fullstory’s behavior analytics data to inform A/B tests, interpret their results, and trigger changes or personalized experiences.

Fullstory Anywhere is a separate product line, so personalization requires an additional contract. And with tests running elsewhere, that’s two vendors and two bills for one workflow.

5. Analytics

Both tools offer web, behavior, and conversion analytics for data-driven optimization. Crazy Egg analytics focuses on web pages and individual sessions, while Fullstory focuses on user journey analysis in digital products over longer periods.

Crazy Egg

Crazy Egg’s Web Analytics reports on traffic trends over time, while Live Activity and Astro Map give you a real-time view of site visitors.ย

Crazy Egg tracks the data directly once you install the script, or you can pull all historic data, segments, and events from GA4. So, it’s a kind of easier-to-use GA4 wrapper.

On top of that, you can track conversions and their impact on revenue with Conversion Analytics, while Conversion Funnels show where in the user journey visitors drop off.

Crazy Egg funnel report showing visitor drop-off across enter site, viewed signup, and signed-up steps.

Funnels are retroactive: if you add new steps, Crazy Egg will use historical data it’s captured for the conversion event.

Fullstory

Like Crazy Egg, Fullstory has retroactive funnel analysis, and conversion analytics quantifies revenue gained or lost at each step.

Its capture layer, Fullcapture, records every interaction automatically, which means you don’t have to tag events to track. That’s a clear advantage when monitoring user behavior in complex products where it’s hard to predict what data you might need in the future, but it does affect the final bill.

In addition, Fullstory has user journey mapping, which shows all user actions leading to or following a conversion event. Useful for diagnosing what causes user drop-offs and designing onboarding experiences in complex products but less so for website optimization, where the paths to conversions are more straightforward.

Finally, Fullstory doesn’t have a web analytics dashboard like Crazy Egg, which again shows its focus on product.

6. AI Capabilities

Both tools have built AI capabilities heavily over the past year. Their AI analyzes and summarizes data inside the product, and you can query it with AI tools, like Claude, Gemini, or Cursor.

Crazy Egg

Crazy Egg’s AI Analysis reads heatmaps, recordings, web traffic, and survey responses, and finds patterns and offers actionable insights.

You can also export the data in JSON and analyze it in Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or any other AI chatbot. Or hook up Crazy Egg via the MCP server and query the data directly. Or run agentic workflows from there.

Speaking of agentic workflows, Crazy Egg’s Tasks, a new feature available in early access, runs full optimization loops automatically. For example, it can set up a heatmap, analyze the results, create a hypothesis for an A/B test, draft variants, and create reports.

Fullstory

Like Crazy Egg, Fullstory also summarizes sessions and has an MCP server.

On top of this, Ask StoryAI, built on Google’s Gemini, answers questions inside the platform, while StoryAI Opportunities surfaces friction points, ranked by revenue impact.

Fullstory’s StoryAI Agents, also in early access, can automatically perform tasks like root cause analysis.

7. Security and Data Handling

Both tools capture behavior without recording sensitive fields and have enterprise-grade data security and compliance stacks.

Crazy Egg puts role-based access control on every plan, scoped per domain, with single sign-on (SSO) and a Compliance Audit Log on Enterprise. Fullstory gates role-based access control and SAML SSO to Enterprise only.

Crazy Egg does not sell customer data or track visitors across websites. It is GDPR, HIPAA, and CCPA compliant, with a data processing agreement (DPA) available.

Fullstory boasts SOC 2 Type 2 and SOC 3, five ISO certifications including ISO 42001, and optional EU data residency. HIPAA-covered organizations can use Fullstory under a business associate agreement.

8. Support

Crazy Egg includes US-based priority support on Plus and above. Agencies get priority support on any plan, while Enterprise customers get live training and onboarding. All customers have access to the help center.

Fullstory offers a help center, a community forum, and online courses. Standard support is included in all plans, while Premium support with faster response times costs extra. So does onboarding and personalized setup or consulting.

According to Vendr, the median annual Fullstory contract value is around $28k. Entry-level deployments (50-100k sessions/month) range from $10k to $25k a year, mid-market (250-500k sessions) from $30k to $70k, and enterprise (1M+) from $80k to $200k.

For contrast, Crazy Egg’s Enterprise plan, which gives you 1M tracked pageviews, costs $7,188.

To match Crazy Egg’s capabilities, you’d also need a third-party experimentation platform. So, if you don’t need the complex digital experience analytics and onboarding features, you will be overpaying.
