How I Chose These Microsoft Clarity Alternatives

Here are the criteria I used to help narrow down the list of alternatives to Microsoft Clarityโ€”which, by the way, is an excellent tool. That said, it may not work for everyone.ย

I looked for:ย

  • Depth of replay and findability. A good session recording tool provides you with more than just a video to look at (and puzzle over). I looked for tools that make it easy to quickly find the right session and jump to the exact moment something happened, complete with a timeline of clicks, errors, and page changes.
  • Heatmap accuracy. Heatmaps should accurately capture the modern user experience (UI), complete with tabs, pop-ups, and modal windows.ย
  • Segmentation. Tools should be able to slice data by different categoriesโ€”like device type, traffic source, and audienceโ€”to make analyzing the data easier and more relevant to the questions youโ€™re asking.ย
  • Mobile device and SPA coverage. Mobile traffic accounts for about half of web traffic around the world. Because of this, itโ€™s crucial for a strong heatmap tool to capture information from mobile apps and single-page applications (SPAs) correctlyโ€”screen and route changes includedโ€”without slowing things down.ย
  • User journey mapping. Understanding the user journey with all its peaks and valleys is key to improving the user experience (UX). A good web analytics tool will have a feature that makes it easy for you to map out different paths and funnelsโ€”including dropoff points, rage clicks, and quick backtracks. It should also be easy to save these journeys and open them individually.ย
  • A/B testing and feedback. Heatmaps help you find issues to fix and low-converting areas to transform. A/B testing is an important feature to help you measure the impact of these changes. Even better if the tool has a way to collect written feedback from users, too.ย
  • Privacy, masking, and compliance features. Does the tool allow sensitive fields to be masked by default, enable allow-listing of safe elements, respect user consent, control personally identifiable information, use single sigh-on (SSO), and keep audit logs? This tight security is important, especially as users become more privacy-aware.

Now, keep in mind that I donโ€™t expect every tool to check every single one of these boxes. But each Microsoft Clarity alternative on this list nails the essentials.ย

1. Crazy Egg

Crazy Egg is a behavior analytics tool with heatmaps and session replays, plus built-in A/B testing, on-site user surveys, pop-up CTAs, and conversion tracking.ย

What I like:ย

  • Thorough website heatmaps. You can explore your web traffic with five different heatmap types for in-depth data: click, scroll, confetti, overlay, and list maps. Segment your audience and/or data by user type, device, conversion goals, traffic source/UTM parameters, and date range for more precise insights.ย
  • Session recordings. Along with heatmaps, Crazy Egg offers detailed session recordings to track what individual users do on your website. For each recording, you can tag certain events to make them easy to find later. You can even leave comments at specific points of the recording and tag team members.ย ย
  • Native A/B testing. Crazy Egg comes with A/B testing baked in, so you donโ€™t have to leave the platform to validate the impact of the changes you make.
  • User surveys. Along with A/B testing, you can create and send surveys directly to users from within the Crazy Egg platform. It automatically creates charts to help you visualize the data, plus AI summaries to make analysis easier.ย
  • Detailed error tracking. Monitoring and fixing errors is easy with Crazy Egg. Error-specific features include automatic JavaScript error detection linked to each session recording, raw stack traces, device/browser and app version details, and a resolve/ignore workflow for faster triage.ย
  • Automatic masking and robust security. Crazy Egg protects your web visitorsโ€™ privacy by automatically masking all input fields. If you want to mask additional elements or skip specific pages, you can configure that, too. Crazy Egg also anonymizes IPs, excludes personally identifiable information (PII) from heatmaps and A/B tests, and runs on AWS with encryption, strict access controls, backups, and regular security reviews.ย

What could use improving:ย

  • Doesnโ€™t support native mobile apps. Crazy Egg does support web visits on mobile devices, which means you can use session recordings, heatmaps, and analytics to understand mobile customers. But it doesnโ€™t work on any native mobile apps.
  • Plan limits. If you arenโ€™t careful with plan limits, you might run out of pageviews, heatmap reports, monthly recordings, and storage space. Crazy Egg wonโ€™t automatically charge you for upgrades, but it will stop recording if you donโ€™t manually upgrade your limits.ย

Best for:ย

  • Marketers and conversion rate optimization teams that want to see user behavior, collect feedback, and test fixes all in one convenient tool. Crazy Egg can work for everyone, from one-person teams to enterprise companies. It has pricing plans to match all use cases, which you can see on the Crazy Egg pricing page.ย

2. Mouseflow

Mouseflow is a web-first behavior analytics platform with session replay, interactive heatmaps, funnel tracking, and journey mapping.

What I like:ย

  • Friction Score. Mouseflow automatically detects friction events like rage clicks, dead clicks, and click errors across all sessions. Then, it ranks each friction event by most to least important. This gives you a super helpful snapshot of your siteโ€™s health and allows you to triage, fixing the most critical issues first.ย
  • Session replay with segmentation. Along with recording detailed views of what your users are doing, Mouseflow offers filters to segment views by traffic source, device, location, or user behavior. This means you can analyze only sessions where users abandoned checkout. Or sessions only where you got new visitors from organic SEO.ย
  • 7 website heatmaps. Mouseflow offers seven types of website heatmaps: click, scroll, movement, attention, friction, interaction, and geographic. As with replays, you can filter heatmaps by device, traffic source, and location.
  • Dedicated form analytics feature. If you ever wonder why people stop filling out a form on your website at a certain point, Mouseflowโ€™s form analytics can help you find out. Track hesitation, blank submissions, drop-off, and field-by-field insights.ย
  • Funnels and journey mapping. With higher-tier plans, you can map out expected versus actual customer journeys, all in the form of Sankey diagrams. You can also create and track conversion funnels with Mouseflow, which is key.ย
  • Surveys. Trigger feedback surveys to appear at specific points in the user journey and integrate them with session replays to get a fuller picture of the whys and hows behind user behavior.ย
  • Security and privacy. Like any other Microsoft Clarity alternative worth its salt, Mouseflow automatically masks sensitive form inputs. With AES-256 encryption, single sign-on (SSO) for higher tiers, and a Visual Privacy Tool to either allow or block specific elements from recording, security is solid.ย

What could use improving:ย

  • No native app capabilities. While Mouseflow works on mobile versions of websites, it doesnโ€™t work for native apps. If you donโ€™t have an app you want to track things on, then this isnโ€™t a big deal.ย
  • No A/B testing. Unlike other tools, Mouseflow lacks a built-in A/B testing feature. Youโ€™ll have to integrate with Optimizely or another A/B testing tool to get those insights.ย
  • Plan gating for advanced features. Make sure you carefully look through the plans and compare the features each tier offers. While Mouseflow does have a free forever plan, itโ€™s very basic and limited.ย

Best for:ย

  • Mouseflow is best for small and mid-size teams that want to zero in on the customer journey and triage friction points.

3. Glassbox

Glassbox is a digital experience analytics tool for both web and mobile apps. It focuses on tagless data capture, instant session replay, and struggle scoring to help drive fixes.ย

What I like:ย

  • Tagless heatmaps and recordings across the web and native apps. If youโ€™re in a hurry and want to avoid having to tag events yourself, Glassbox offers tagless data capture. Basically, it โ€œwatchesโ€ all screen recordings for you and auto-captures common events without compelling you to manually tag them.ย
  • Mobile app analytics. Glassbox offers analytics for the web and for native mobile apps. This sets it apart from some of the other Microsoft Clarity alternatives.ย
  • Customer journey analytics. With Glassbox, you can view an individual userโ€™s journey over a day, a week, or even longer. Thereโ€™s a strong focus on helping you track, visualize, and improve your website at the funnel level.ย
  • Voice of the customer tools. Create customer surveys with Glassboxโ€™s native tool or integrate with a favorite survey creation software to gather feedback from your web visitors.ย
  • Struggle and error analysis. The struggle and error analysis feature helps you find recorded sessions that match specific types of struggles users are having. You can also filter journey maps to see the impact of these struggles and errors.ย
  • Granular privacy controls. Whether youโ€™re working with mobile apps, mobile websites, or desktop sites, Glassbox offers tight controls for user privacy. The platform has ISO 27701 certification and also adheres to SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, and ISO 27017. Itโ€™s also HIPAA, GLBA, PCI, CCPA , and GDPR compliant and automatically masks sensitive input fields.ย

What could use improving:ย

  • Sales-assisted pricing and packages. You canโ€™t just decide you want to use Glassbox and get started right away. Instead, you have to go through the whole talk-to-a-sales-rep deal to figure out which package works for you and learn what youโ€™ll be paying.ย
  • Features can be overwhelming for smaller brands. Glassbox is an enterprise-grade suite, so if you just want heatmaps, replays, and a few other tools, you might not get the value out of Glassbox that you would from a more SMB-friendly tool.ย

Best for:ย

  • Regulated industries (think healthcare or finance) or mobile-heavy teams that need to track and audit every detail with the strictest possible privacy. To see the full list of features, check out Glassboxโ€™s pricing and plans page.ย

4. Fullstory

Fullstory is a digital experience analytics platform that offers heatmaps, session replay, and deep analytics for both desktop and mobile web browsers, plus native mobile apps.

What I like:ย

  • One platform for customers and employees. Fullstory offers analytics targeted at a companyโ€™s web visitors, employees, and warehouse workersโ€”all in one system. This makes it easy for your IT team to analyze internal app usage and customer behavior from a single platform.ย
  • Thorough, searchable replay. You can tag events manually or use Fullstoryโ€™s automatic tagging to organize and analyze user sessions. With the platformโ€™s search function, itโ€™s easy to find exactly the right moment you want to study.
  • StoryAI to help speed things up. With Fullstoryโ€™s AI agent, StoryAI, you can quickly turn raw data into takeaways to help you make the improvements necessary to improve UI. You donโ€™t have to comb through everything yourself.ย
  • Recording-free app analysis. Fullstory doesnโ€™t actually record user actions on apps, citing privacy and load concerns. Instead, it uses a proprietary feature to scan your app 300 times per minute for a full picture of whatโ€™s going on and what needs fixing.ย
  • Privacy and security. Fullstory uses Private-by-Default and element-level rules so you can exclude, mask, or unmask content. Form privacy features mask inputs by default, and settings prevent sensitive data from appearing in any session replays. Itโ€™s a little challenging to pin down exactly what security measures Fullstory puts into placeโ€”it involves downloading files, which is annoyingโ€”but it does seem robust. You can learn more in the Fullstory Trust Center.ย

What could use improving:ย

  • No survey features. If you want to gather feedback from users, youโ€™ll have to use a third-party integration or do it off-platform.ย
  • Sales-assisted pricing and packaging. While you can view Fullstoryโ€™s plans and features publicly, thereโ€™s no easy way to find out how much youโ€™ll pay to use Fullstory. Youโ€™ll have to request pricing and a demo.ย

Best for:ย

  • Enterprise teams that need one platform to monitor and improve both customer UX and employee workflows across both websites and native mobile apps.ย

5. Lucky Orangeย

Lucky Orange is an all-in-one website optimization tool that pairs recordings and heatmaps with simple page insights and lightweight surveys and announcementsย

What I like:ย

  • Session recordings with lots of context. Lucky Orange replays the whole visitor journey, and the Visitor Profiles tool stitches sessions, form activity, chats, and survey responses together. This makes it easier to get a full picture of whatโ€™s going on in your UX/UI.ย
  • Heatmaps for modern UI. Lucky Orangeโ€™s heatmaps catch everythingโ€”not just static pages, but also sliders, pop-ups, carousels, and all the modern UI elements your site might have. There are only three visualizations, though: click, scroll, and move.ย
  • Form analytics to help pinpoint drop-offs. With form analytics, Lucky Orange shows you which fields users struggle with and displays session recordings that match those friction points.ย
  • Conversion funnels to help visualize the user journey. Funnels are tied to replays, which makes it easy to track multi-step user flows, spot leaks, and open the exact sessions to see why people bailed on your site.ย
  • Targeted surveys and announcements. With Lucky Orangeโ€™s announcements and surveys feature, you can create announcements to tell web visitors about key updates or promos. Surveys can be triggered by exit intent, scroll depth, UTM source, audience segments, and time on page.ย

What could use improving:ย

  • No native A/B testing. If you want A/B testing, youโ€™ll have to use Lucky Orangeโ€™s Optimizely integration, as thereโ€™s no native testing feature.ย
  • No native mobile app capabilities. Lucky Orange focuses on websites, whether theyโ€™re visited via device or desktop. If you have an app, youโ€™ll probably need to go with an enterprise tool built to track everything, native apps included.ย

Best for:ย

  • Smaller ecommerce teams and agencies that need a quick, simple way to start tracking website analytics. Another great thing about Lucky Orange is that it offers every feature on all of its plans (including a freemium plan). What differs is how many monthly sessions you get. See the full plans and pricing on Lucky Orangeโ€™s page.ย
